Putney Sunday Roast: The Top 9
1. The Duke’s Head
One of the best Putney Sunday roast options is the Duke’s Head, located right on the side of the River Thames.
A grand Victorian traditional English pub with comfy chairs, roaring fires and a cosy atmosphere, you can’t ask for much more when you’re looking for a hearty roast dinner.
Putney Sunday roast options include:
- A trio of meats, pigs in blankets and crackling (£24)
- Beef, pork belly or buttermilk chicken (£17-£19)
- Vegan black pudding and tofu wellington (£15)
All meat/veggie options are served with tasty vegetables, a Yorkshire pudding (the real winner of the meal), gravy and herb roast potatoes.
My favourite thing about the Duke’s Head is the views. There’s also a small beer garden if the weather is nice, so you can enjoy your roast and wine in the sun.
🗺️ My London must-have: I use my Insta Mini 11 to take photos on all of my trips. As they print instantly, they’re perfect for making a scrapbook and writing in all your favourite and funniest memories. I’ve even got my boyfriend joining in on it now too!
2. The Boathouse
Another riverside venue is the Boathouse. Spread across two floors, with one with outside decking and an unbeatable view of the River Thames.
Their Sunday menu isn’t restricted to roast dinners, and you can pick from an extensive menu of fish, burgers and salads.
If you are opting in for the roast, the roast potatoes are incredible. Dipped in beef fat (sorry, veggies), they’re crisp to perfection and will leave you returning to the Boathouse time and time again. It’s become a regular Sunday treat for us!
The Putney Sunday roast menu includes:
- A trio of meats (£26.50)
- 28-day-aged rump (£24)
- Buttermilk and thyme chicken (£22)
- Pork belly & roast loin (£22)
- Roasted cauliflower (v) (£20)
All roast dinners are served with the award-worthy beef fat potatoes, marmite roasted carrots (don’t knock until you’ve tried them!), savoy cabbage, wild garlic, creamed leeks and a double egg Yorkshire pudding.
The dream.
🗺️ My London must-have: If you’re solo travelling, don’t forget to take earphones for busy public transport. Listening to a podcast or tuning out from the noise is a lifesaver on a busy city trip!
3. Coat and Badge
The Coat and Badge is one of the best pubs in Putney, and not just for its buzzing social scene.
The Sunday roasts are also a winner!
Boasting Yorkshire puddings the size of your plate, the Coat and Badge is known for its laidback vibes and delicious Sunday roast options. It’s the perfect hangover option.
The Coat and Badge also have a large beer harden with screens showing popular sports games, so if you head down early you can make a day of it.
🗺️ My London must-have: Solo travelling on your London trip? Stay safe by carrying your cash or card in a money belt. I know it sounds silly, but Europe can be chaotic and pickpockets are known to work in busy areas. it’s better to be safe than sorry!
4. The Jolly Gardeners
Oh my gosh. The Jolly Gardeners is just magic when it comes to nailing a Putney Sunday roast. Like seriously.
Either opt in for a plate full of hearty food yourself, or order a shared roast. Priced at only £37, this gigantic meal will feed two of you, and includes chicken, beef and pork belly. It’s a real cracker (and also adds to the experience).
Pair with a glass of red wine and the large TV screens showing your favourite sports and you’ve got the perfect Sunday.
Putney Sunday roast menu includes:
- Tri of meats sharer (£37)
- 21-day-aged beef (£18.50)
- Half roast chicken (£16.50)
- Nut roast (£16)
- Slow cooked pork belly (£16.50)
As always, the roast is served with a mountain of ruffled thyme- roasted potatoes, a large Yorkshire pudding, buttered cabbage and root vegetables.
Ooh, and the best part? They serve cauliflower cheese and pigs in blankets on the side.
It’s a winner for a Putney Sunday roast, trust me.
🗺️ My London must-have: Solo travelling but still want to take photos? 📸 I’ve found the most perfect adjustable tripod that’s lightweight and easy to set up (you don’t want any awkward moments alone, I know how it feels!)
5. The Green Man
I might be biased as the Green Man is only a few minutes from my house, but it is by far one of the best Sunday roasts in Putney.
You can also order meals off the main menu if you’re not all having a roast dinner, making it the perfect spot for large groups.
Putney Sunday roast options include:
- Rump of Beef, braised ox shin ragu (£19.50)
- Butternut squash, truffle & wild mushroom pie (v) (£15.50)
- Pork belly, crackling, gammon stuffing (£18)
- Roasted half chicken, pigs in blankets (£17.50)
And of course, the best part.
All meats are served with beef dripping roast potatoes (they’re unbelievable), roasted Heritage carrots, parsnips, spring greens, creamed leeks & peas, AND a Yorkshire pudding with gravy. You can’t beat it!
🗺️ My London must-have: Well, it’s a little more advanced, but if you want to take high-quality photos, make sure you invest in a good camera. This doesn’t have to be thousands of pounds, and our favourite is the Canon EOS 6D Mark II.
6. Home SW15
If you fancy a higher end Sunday lunch in Putney, Home is the place to be.
Home is one of my favourite restaurants in Putney anyway, and when I found out they did a roast dinner, I couldn’t wait to try it.
And of course, it didn’t disappoint. (Will I find a roast in Putney I don’t like?!)
However, the Sunday roast menu at Home works a little differently. You’ll opt-in for a 3-course meal, all for £29.50.
Served between midday to 3pm, the Putney Sunday roast menu includes:
- 28 day aged Beef wellington (I highly recommend!) (+£10 supp)
- Garden peas and asparagus tart
- Sea bream
- Shrimp burger
And dessert won’t disappoint either. If you need some help, get the salted caramel and pecan cheesecake.
Thank me later!
🗺️ My London must-have: A portable power bank. Don’t get caught short and lose your phone battery whilst travelling! If you’re solo travelling, you’re going to rely on it to get you from A to B.
7. The Spotted Horse
One thing that I love about the Spotted Horse Sunday roast is the mushroom wellington. Not only is it one of the cheapest Sunday roasts in Putney, but it is bloody delicious. Highly recommend it (even if you’re not a vegetarian!)
The Spotted Horse is another fun and social pub in Putney, and their Sunday roasts do not disappoint.
Putney Sunday roast options include:
- Aberdeen Angus beef rump, braised ox cheek (£20)
- Pork belly, pea & ham croquette, caramelised pear (£16.50)
- Lamb shoulder, lamb & apricot croquette (£21)
- Pan roast chicken supreme, stuffed thigh (£17.50)
- Mushroom wellington (vg) (£13.50)
Plus, the brownie with ice cream is the perfect way to finish your Sunday lunch in the Spotted Horse.
🗺️ Booking hostels? I always use Hostelworld as their deals are usually the cheapest. They also have reviews from other backpackers, and explain the vibe of the hostel (party, chill, social…) so you know exactly what you’re booking.
8. Roxie
Roxie is primarily a steak restaurant and is well-known for its 21 day aged delicious meat from Uraguay.
However, they do offer a Sunday roast option, and if you’re a big steak fan, this one isn’t to be missed.
Putney Sunday roast options include:
- Fillet steak (£25)
- Rump steak (£18)
- Roast chicken (£16)
Unfortunately, there’s not a veggie option, but they do have other items on the menu to choose from.
All roasts are served with slow roasted potatoes, Yorkshire pudding, honey roasted carrots, tenderstem broccoli and thick rosemary gravy. It’s pretty tasty!
🗺️ My London must-have: A wheelie backpack! Check out my favourite, the Osprey 65L wheeled backpack. It’s dreamy for long-term trips and when you need more than a carry-on!
9. East Putney Tavern
One of the cheaper options for a Putney Sunday roast is the East Putney Tavern (EPT).
The EPT is well known in Putney for being a social hub and home of live music on the weekend, and their Sunday roasts definitely don’t disappoint.
With a new ‘secret’ garden, you can even enjoy your Sunday roast in the sunshine.
Putney Sunday roast options include:
- Slow roast Waveney valley pork belly (£14)
- Rare roast 28 day Aberdeen Angus sirloin (£15.50)
- Roast Shropshire chicken (£13)
- Roast squash, sage & chestnut mushroom pithivier (£12)
If you’re still booking flights, I recommend checking lastminute.com for the latest deals. Recently, we were able to save £50 on our flights just by booking through Last Minute!

What makes a good Sunday Roast?
The all-important question. Just what makes a good Sunday roast?!
To be honest, it’s a really personal thing.
If you’re a veggie, you’re going to want good options that aren’t just meat-based. A good vegetarian wellington can make all the difference!
For some, it’s all about the gravy. The thickness, taste, and consistency…it’s an important factor to consider when deciding on what makes a good Sunday roast. (There’s nothing quite like gravy that’s made from the cooking juices).
However, if you ask a meat-eater, it’s all about the way the meat is cooked and served.
Personally, I love a good Yorkshire pudding. If I see from a pub’s menu they serve large Yorkshire puddings, I’m sold.
What time is a Putney Sunday Roast / what time is a Sunday roast London?
So, what time should you have a Sunday roast in London?
Most pubs in Putney serve a Sunday roast between the hours of 12-4. It’s all entirely personal what time you have your Putney Sunday roast, but if you leave it too late, you run the risk of not being able to get the meat or vegetarian option that you’d like.
Aim to head for your Putney Sunday roast around 1-2 pm (ooh, and don’t forget to book in advance. It gets busy!)
How much does a Sunday Roast cost in Putney?
Putney Sunday roasts cost between £15-30, depending on the venue and the meat choice.
If you’re on a budget, going to a pub will be your best bet. Restaurants tend to be more expensive.
Why is it a tradition to have a roast on a Sunday?
The tradition of a Sunday Roast dates back over 500 years, and it is thought to originate from King Henry VII’s rule in 1485.
It’s thought the Sunday roast came about due to Roman Catholics and Anglicans not being able to eat meat on any day other than Sunday, so it was a celebration that became a tradition.
Crazy that it’s still here today, and for most a good Sunday roast is essential to an amazing week ahead!

My blog was created from my love for travel and the aim to get you on the road with nothing but confidence and a whoooooole lot of excitement 🥳.
Short on time? Here are some of my travel must-haves!
- A portable power bank: do not get caught short and lost phone battery whilst travelling! It is the worst, I promise! (Especially if you’re solo).
- A wheelie backpack: I invested in my first wheeled backpack a year ago and I am NOT looking back. Gone are the days when I lug 20kg round on my back!
- Filter water bottle: So many countries have undrinkable tap water. This water bottle allows you to drink water from any tap, stream (or even puddle!) safely AND you’re saving the environment!
- Worldwide travel adapter: Must, must, must have when it comes to backpacking. It will make your life 100x easier and you only need to buy it once!
- Speakers: Ok, this ones a must in my eyes, but it isn’t life or death. Want to make friends in your hostel room easily? Be the one with the music. (This actually works, I promise!)
